England’s recycling rate creeps up 1%

England's municipal recycling rate now stands at 42.5%, showing a slight improvement over the past 12 months, according to latest figures.


The statistics released by Defra today (May 3) are up by 1% on the previous year (April 2010 – March 2011) based on data submitted by all of England’s local authorities.

Household waste sent to landfill has decreased by 7.6% to 10.5m tonnes between the financial year 2010-11, and the rolling year October 2010 to September 2011.

Waste generation per person has also reduced. The weight of household waste generated in the year October 2010 to September 2011 was 443kg per person. Of this, 188 kg was recycled, composted or reused.
