Government faces calls to bolster support for EfW

Energy-from-waste leaders have called on the Government to do more to back low carbon technologies following the Prime Minister's cabinet reshuffle this week.

Air Products’ global asset manager for energy businesses Jeff Lockett spoke directly to a panel of Energy & Climate Change Select Committee MPs of the importance of building investor confidence in clean-tech technologies such as gasification.

“Government must do what they say they are going to do, with simplicity and transparency, in order to give international investors the confidence to invest in the UK,” he told delegates at a Policy Exchange event in London yesterday (September 5).

He said that the UK’s positive investment climate was the decisive factor in locating his company’s first advanced gasification facility in Teesside.

However he also noted that delays, uncertainty and radical changes to policies gave investors pause for thought. Policy stability, certainty and transparency were crucial, he stressed, if companies like his were to continue to regard the UK as an attractive investment proposition.

Echoing this, pyrolysis firm PyroPure is pushing for more support from government to help “cutting edge” green businesses prosper as they are the ones spearheading Britain’s low carbon revolution.

Pyropure’s director Andrew Hamilton said: “The development of green technology is one of the fastest growing industries in the UK.

“We need Government to match the pace of innovation with fast and forward thinking to allow this technology to be part of the UK’s waste framework.”
