The latest installation, which coincides with Recycle Week’s 10th anniversary, is part of a roll out programme, in partnership with Palm Recycling, to provide customers at more than 300 stores with a convenient place to recycle household waste and donate clothing.

The retailer’s recycling centres receive the highest volume of donations for Oxfam in the UK beyond Oxfam’s own shops, helping to divert waste from landfill and supporting the charity’s emergency and development work.

Sainsbury’s head of engineering, sustainability, energy and environment Paul Crewe said: “Where we’ve introduced the new recycling centres we’ve seen measurable increases in the amount of materials being recycled.

“Customer feedback about the new centres has been very positive, particularly that a wider range of items can now be recycled.”

Sainsbury’s also revealed that its customers have now donated almost 10 million items of clothing and accessories items and almost two million books, CDs and DVDs in the past year.

Last week Sainsbury’s announced it had achieved its target of diverting all of its waste from landfill in three years.
