Unilever met up with representatives from several other organisations including the Institute of Hospitality, WRAP and PDM Group to form a ‘visionary panel’ to address the challenges and opportunities in developing a nationwide infrastructure to divert food waste from landfill.

The panel aims to identify key areas where action is needed for the UK to be in a position to recycle all the food waste generated across the food chain. Topics discussed at the initial meeting included a landfill ban, planning issues and educating businesses to ensure greater uptake of food waste recycling solutions.

PDM Group’s commercial director Philip Simpson said: “Food waste is one waste stream that is more problematic for producers and collectors, be it due to poor recycling infrastructure, household apathy or limited collection providers.

“By coming together, the panel aims to develop a roadmap with key areas of focus with the aim to eradicate food waste from landfill by 2020.”
