Atlas Packaging secures partnership to recycle 1500t of cardboard annually

Waste management firm Viridor and Atlas Packaging have unveiled a new three-year partnership that expects to see in the region of 1500 tonnes of pre-consumer cardboard waste being recycled each year.

Cardboard off-cuts, a by-product from the packagers manufacturing process and previously seen as waste, are now being delivered to Viridor and baled on a daily basis.

After processing, baling and quality control checks, Viridor said it will then market this as high quality recyclate that will end up being made into books, boxes or any other card products.

Atlas Packaging managing director Jason Sharman said: “70% less energy is used when making new paper and card from recycled stock than when using virgin pulp so it is great to know that we are doing what we can to support the environment.

“The high quality of the cardboard waste we produce also means that it is in demand in the manufacturing sector and we can get a good return on what was essentially a waste product.”

Viridor said it recycles 100% of the paper that it receives. The company collects from printers, direct mail houses, newsprint factories and offices, as well as manages paper collected from people’s homes through local authority contracts.

Viridor manager at Martock paper and card recycling facility Dave Matthews said: “We are delighted to be working with Atlas and helping them maximise their waste recycling.”
