Construction industry looks to increase 'green growth' opportunities

The UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC), backed by trade and professional organisations across the construction and property sector, has sent an open letter to the chancellor today asking the Government to encourage long-term investment in green infrastructure.

Backed by industry organisations such as the British Property Federation, Construction Products Association, House Builders Federation and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the letter demands a set of policy changes that will allow the industry to make the most of green growth opportunities.

Some of the demands highlighted by the UK-GBC include, a recommitment to the zero carbon homes policy, better incentivisation of the Green Deal and a reinstatement of consequential improvements and 'ringfenced' funding for refurbishing public buildings.

The letter states: "Although we recognise that industry needs to take a lead on delivery, there are some things only Government can do to address clear and persistent market failures and create a level playing field.

"There are therefore policy actions that could be taken which would better enable our members to make the most of this opportunity, and to deliver tangible results on the ground" it continues.

The UK-GBC expressed the industry's desire to see strong growth in the UK economy but called for clarity around regulation.

"Clearly there are issues here that need to be considered in the context of the Government's objectives on regulation.

"Our members of course welcome a reduction in burdensome regulation, but it is vital to distinguish between unnecessary red tape, and smart regulation that can provide clear direction as the basis for industry investment, innovation and growth," the letter concludes.
