The competition, run by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, will be split into three different categories.

£25m will be bided for by local councils to improve thermal efficiency in homes, aimed at cutting heating costs for low income and vulnerable people during the winter.

A £10m fund will also be made available for a variety of schemes aimed at promoting the Green Deal, from whole house energy efficiency retrofits to community engagement events to raise awareness on the issue.

The remaining £5m sum will be available for councils and third sector organisations in an attempt to help set up collective switching schemes across local communities.

Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Ed Davey said:
“With prices rising and temperatures dropping, we want to make sure we are doing all we can to help vulnerable householders keep warm this winter.

“This funding will put local councils at the heart of action to get energy bills down, for instance helping low income householders upgrade old inefficient heating systems and insulate draughty homes”.
