UK woodfuel suppliers map launches

A new national biomass suppliers database to help those looking to take advantage of the Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI) has been unveiled by the Biomass Energy Centre (BEC) and Carbon Trust.

As part of the scheme, an interactive map which lists the details of more than 300 woodfuel suppliers operating across the UK has launched, with the aim of making it easier for people to identify local and national suppliers.

Following the official launch of the RHI on Monday (November 28), both BEC and Carbon Trust said they anticipate increased demand for woodfuel, and as a result have been working to support the development of suppliers.

The new tool is expected to demonstrate to potential end-users that the UK's woodfuel supply chain is well established in many parts of the country, offering a viable alternative to oil and gas.

BEC information officer Will Rolls, who helped develop the service, said: "Our old woodfuel suppliers listing was one of the most popular areas of the website but we have been struggling to keep pace with demand.

"The new map presents information in a much clearer way and lets the fuel supplier tell potential customers more about the service they offer. We are grateful to the Carbon Trust who, through the Biomass Heat Accelerator, have made this map possible"

Carbon Trust director of innovation Benj Sykes, said: "By facilitating the development of this map on behalf of the Biomass Energy Centre, we hope to provide confidence to sites contemplating installing biomass heating, that fuel can be found for their boilers."

The announcement follows the recent launch of the Woodfuel Woodland Improvement Grant by the Forestry Commission in England, an initiative designed to increase the amount of wood entering the supply chain from currently underutilised woodlands.

The interactive map can be viewed here.
