World's first IRCC power plant revealed

A plant claiming to be the first in the world to combine solar, wind and natural gas power is under construction in Turkey.

The facility an Integrated Renewables Combined Cycle (IRCC) power plant is being developed by Turkish firm MetCap.

It will be built by German-based GE and use its new FlexEfficiency according to both companies who released details of the scheme yesterday (July 8) at the POWER-GEN Europe 2011 conference.

The plant will be built in the south not far from the coast in Karaman, Turkey, and will be capable of generating 530 megawatts of energy- roughly enough power to run more than 600,000 homes.

Both firms claim engineers will be able to 'seamlessly integrate' natural gas, wind and solar thermal power, using GE's technology/

GE Energy president, Paul Browning, said: "IRCC power represents a significant growth opportunity for GE Energy.

"At MetCap's site conditions, we will achieve 69% plant efficiency, and this technology provides the capability to deliver efficiency greater than 70% at gas turbine world conditions."

MetCap Energy Investments chairman, Dr Celal Metin, said: "We believe our projects must simultaneously meet the need for increased energy, environmental responsibility and economic growth, while preserving precious water resources."

The plant is due to be operational in 2015.
