26 September 2005 Planners and developers join forces to look at climate changeOn the 29th November the Blueprint for a Changing Climate: how the planning system can deliver adaptation to climate change event will be held in Winchester's Guildhall to review how well the planning system in England is adapting to climate change and to explore new ideas on what more can be done in the UK and across Europe. The event will be hosted by the European Spatial Planning: Adapting to Climate Events (ESPACE) Project under the aegis of the UK's EU Presidency. It will bring together experts from both sides of the planning system - those who are a part of the administration of the planning system and those who use it. Organisers hope this will set the scene for an international debate to identify what needs to be done to assist the planning system to deliver climate change adaptation and mitigation. Speakers include senior figures from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, Graham Jones of the Planning Officers Society, Mark Southgate from the Environment Agency, Sebastian Catovsky of the Association of British Insurers, Liz Peace from the British Property Federation and Hugh Ellis from Friends of the Earth. The conference will also discuss a number of key issues including: Are the existing climate change policies/guidelines sufficient in light of the impacts of climate change? How well placed is the current planning system to deliver adaptation to climate change? What are the current barriers to further adaptation responses within the planning system? What areas of climate change adaptation need further guidance/policies?
