Meeting on January 26, both those in opposition and those in favour of nuclear energy discussed the subject of transparency and its impact on the environment.

EESC vice-president, Irini Pari, said: “There is a clear consensus that more needs to be done with respect to the governance of nuclear energy.

“It must be more transparent and more accountable.

“There is a legitimate right for all Europeans to be well informed about and to be involved in the decision-making process of the nuclear energy domain.”

Anti-nuclear campaigners claim that nuclear energy isn’t entirely ‘carbon free’ and so is not a solution to global warming.

At present there are no nuclear power plants in Ireland after proposals to build one in the 70s fell through in the face of strong environmentalist opposition.
