Restaurant fined after dumping waste

A restaurant owner has been fined and had his car crushed after an uncover operation revealed he was dumping waste in the street.

Suba Miha owner of the Cardamom Indian restaurant in Warwickshire pleaded guilty to flytipping last week.

The restaurant, described on its website as the best ‘within ten miles of Redditch’, opened in 2006.

But, recently owner Miha had been cutting corners by ‘repeatedly’ driving to Westley Street in Nechells, Birmingham to dump waste including left over curry, ghee and oil containers.

Birmingham City Council says it received ‘several complaints’ and launched an undercover operation.

After being spotted dumping waste by investigators Miha was taken to Birmingham Magistrates Court, fined £900, ordered to pay costs of £700 costs and has had his vehicle seized by the court.

This is the first time Birmingham City Council, the UK’s largest single authority, has used powers to confiscate and destroy a flytipper’s vehicle.

Birmingham’s head of district services, Mark Croxford, said: “I am pleased the court has treated this offence with the seriousness it deserves.

“Residents have the right to live in a clean environment, and it beggars belief someone would go out of their way to drive into the city to dump food waste instead of disposing of it legally.

“The message to fly tippers is clear, don’t dump your rubbish in Birmingham, we will catch you, and you will pay a heavy price.”
