9 February 2010 World-wide recall for leading hybrid car Toyota has been beset by problems in recent weeks and the latest problem to hit the firm relates to the software controlling the antilock braking system (ABS) in the prius, prius plug-in hybrid, sai and HS250h sold in Japan. ABS is used during harsh weather, such as much of the World is currently experiencing, to improve the braking of the vehicles in snow and slush. The recall, which was announced this morning (February 9), will see approximately 223,000 vehicles going back to the firm in Japan. Worldwide Toyota has sold around 400,000 of the vehicles, and depending on what they find in Japan, the firm has announced 'remedial measures as soon as possible' in the United States, Europe and in other regions. Toyota president, Akio Toyoda, said: "Let me assure everyone we will redouble our commitment to quality as the lifeline of our company. "With myself taking the lead, all of us at Toyota will tackle the issue in close cooperation with our dealers and with our suppliers. "Together, we will do everything in our power to regain the confidence of our customers, drivers of the four models subject to the recall can experience reduced braking performance resulting in increased braking distance when their vehicles switch to hydraulic braking-only." Corrective reprogramming of the cars is expected to take approximately around 40 minutes per vehicle.
