CNN interviews edie editor on food waste

In a major media coup for edie, the website's waste editor Maxine Perella has been featured in a CNN mini-documentary advising on the treatment of supermarket food waste.

The American network giant approached Perella via twitter to provide an expert opinion on what the UK’s supermarkets are doing in practice to reduce the volume of food waste produced and also direct it from landfill.

Perella, who was interviewed on a landfill site run by Viridor in south London, told the news channel that one of the most effective ways to deal with the mountains of food waste produced each year was to treat it through anaerobic digestion.

She warned that the public was sceptical about recycling and attributed this in part to the waste industry, which she said had a poor media image. But she pointed to a number of innovative developments within the industry which she hoped would change this perception.
