The latest Pepsico building to win green credentials is its Frito-Lay manufacturing facility in Azov, Russia.

The facility in Russia has sustainable water features and has achieved a 100% reduction in potable water use for landscape irrigation and estimates future water savings of 40% for installed plumbing features.

The construction is expected to have 18% energy savings through high performance electric lighting, and temperature controls.

The building has increased ventilation rates and low toxic materials have been used for improved air quality.

US Green Building Council president, CEO and founding chair, Rick Fedrizzi, said: “Buildings are a prime example of how human systems integrate with natural systems.

“The PepsiCo project in Azov efficiently uses our natural resources and makes an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit future generations to come.”

Other PepsiCo buildings with LEED certification worldwide include its Chongqing plant and office in China and the PepsiCo Plaza and Sustainability Center in Chicago.

The company has a programme for sustainable growth called Performance with Purpose.

Its strategy is to find innovative ways to minimize the business’s impact on the environment by conserving energy and water usage and reducing packaging volume.

PepsiCo senior vice president of operations, Jeff Malcolm, said: “Through our focus on sustainable business practice, which we call Performance with Purpose, we believe in investing in a healthier future for people and our planet.

“This is a fantastic achievement for the Russian team and is a huge milestone for the European business, once again recognising PepsiCo’s commitment to greener business on a global scale.”
