In brief: organic waste contract news

Latest developments in organic waste treatment involve build work for three new anaerobic digestion and biomass sites, plus a key bio-digestate contract win.

BiogenGreenfinch is set to build its second anaerobic digestion (AD) plant for food waste in North Wales.

The company has been named preferred bidder appointment made by the North Wales Consortium of three county councils for the 22,500-tonne capacity facility in Denbighshire.

The deal follows the company’s appointment earlier this year to build a plant for Gwynedd Council. Subject to planning approval, construction will start by the end of the year.

Another AD player, Agrivert, is due to open a new plant shortly in Wallingford, Oxfordshire. The facility will process some of the company’s contracted food waste in the county as well as material from other long term contracts.

The facility will have a capacity of 50,000 tonnes per annum and will produce 2.4MW of power. Agrivert has already identified markets for the digestate product, most of which will be recycled locally.

Meanwhile construction is underway on a £200m biomass plant at Markinch, near Glenrothes. KIRK Environmental is working for Saxlund International who is developing the project with Canning Conveyor providing the feeding and silo unloading systems.

Build work is scheduled for completion in July this year and the plant is expected to be operational in early 2013. It will have capacity for 400,000 tonnes of biomass each year and will generates 50MW of clean energy.

Lastly, 4R Recycling has been awarded a 25-year contract by 3SE – the Shanks and SSE PFI joint venture – to remove and recycle bio-compost produced at a proposed mechanical biological treatment (MBT) and AD site in Manvers.

The complex is part of a £750m PFI contract 3SE signed with Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham Waste Partnership earlier this month. Digestate produced at the site will be transported by 4R Recycling and used to restore brownfield sites throughout Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.

4R Consultants will also be working alongside Shanks to develop new end-of-waste uses for bio-compost. The contract will commence in 2015 when the facility becomes operational.
