Celebrities and residents use twitter to tidy London

#riotcleanup was the top trending subject for the UK on twitter today (August 9), with celebrities including actor Simon Pegg, joining in with people from across the UK to back the clean-up.

Local authorities across the capital face a huge bill to clean up burnt out bins and other infrastructure destroyed by vandals.

But in an action organised almost entirely online people have come to the worst hit parts of London, including Hackney, Lewisham, Tottenham and Croydon to tidy up after the rioters.

A site www.riotcleanup.co.uk has been set up to show people where the worst affected areas are, while pages on facebook also give details for people who want to help.

While twitter users like Richard_001 have been posting pictures of themselves getting on with cleaning up London.

However, people were warned not to go to Clapham Junction to help in the clean up this morning as police were still treating the area as a crime scene and turned people away.
