Renewable Energy Systems (RES) Ltd took the Business Commitment to the Environment Award for its conversion and extension of the former Ovaltine egg farm at Beaufort Court, a prominent office development alongside the M25.

The project aimed to provide modern offices while demonstrating the latest in renewable energy projects and energy-efficient building techniques.

The site, which includes a 50m wind turbine, is a world first in zero emissions commercial office development and provides all the buildings’ heat, air conditioning and power needs on site.

Winning the award will allow RES to compete for the European Business Awards for the Environment.

British firms must first win an award accredited by the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) to take part in the biennial European awards.

Entries for the current round of European Business Awards for the Environment are due by October 3, 2005.

“Businesses of all types have a crucial role to play in encouraging environmental practices that help to conserve natural resources and reduce waste pollution,” said Simon Fordham of the RSA.

“There is increasing evidence that corporate responsibility and competitiveness go together.

“Recognising the achievements, in the UK and in Europe, of companies that pioneer environmentally innovative policies and products brings only benefits to all concerned.”

In April this year, the RSA handed over the reins of its awards website to edie.
