Waste Recycling Group (WRG) is now in talks with Wrexham County Borough Council to discuss plans for new recycling and recovery facilities after the authority decided to continue negotiations for a 25-year PFI contract.

Initial discussions will focus on technical proposals for the new facilities, service delivery arrangements, and legal and financial issues.

WRG is a major player in the UK’s waste management sector and is responsible for many recycling facilities as well as energy-from-waste incinerators.

The company has confirmed, however, that the new proposals for Wrexam do not feature any form of on-site incineration.

Using proven technology, the emphasis of the project will be on recovery, recycling and composting, and will include the preparation of a waste fuel to replace the use of fossil fuels in industrial combustion processes.

“We’re pleased to be entering this exciting new phase in our long-standing relationship with Wrexham County Borough Council and its residents,” said Chris Cox, commercail director of WRG.

“There’s a great deal at stake for the area and it’s vital that we work together effectively and bring this project to a successful conclusion.

“Delays could have severe repercussions on the council in terms of lost funding and financial penalties.”

Mr Cox said WRG was committed to keeping residents across the borough fully informed of progress.

“It’s important that residents have a sense of ownership of these developments, since the success of the project will ultimately depend on their full participation in collection and recycling initiatives.

“One of our priorities will be to ensure that our approach, and the technology that underpins it, is fully explained to stakeholders and the public at large, and that all parties are kept informed of progress.”
