Environmental campaigners Friends of the Earth have written off Government proposals for the next phase of the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme as ‘completely inadequate’.

While many were taken by surprise by how green-leaning the proposed emissions targets were (see related story) FoE claim the Government has not gone far enough.

The annual reduction of 8 million tonnes of carbon Government says should be delivered is significantly lower than the 12 million tonnes needed to get back on track for achieving its 20% reduction target by 2010.

Friends of the Earth’s climate campaigner, Germana Canzi said: “Emissions have risen since Labour came to power.

“Ministers must do far more if they want to demonstrate genuine leadership on tackling climate change.

“This is why we need a new climate law that will commit successive governments to annual cuts in carbon dioxide emissions.”
