EIC launches Scottish land remediation lobby

Over 50 companies making up the Scottish Contaminated Land Remediation Lobby will build on the work of an equivalent UK-wide group within the EIC, which counts 180 member companies.

The UK lobby’s past successes in Scotland include convincing the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) to introduce the Mobile Treatment Licensing system, under which remediation companies only need one licence.

“The regeneration agenda is different in Scotland, and needs a different approach. The group will be concentrating on the issue of contaminated land risk assessment, licensing land remediation technologies, where a continued effort is needed, issues around the definition of waste and hazardous waste,” EIC director Merlin Hyman told edie.

Adrian Wilkes, EIC chairman, said: “Cleaning up contaminated land is at the heart of regenerating Scotland’s urban areas – but it is hampered by inappropriate regulatory controls. The EIC Scottish Contaminated Land Working Group will give the industry the strong voice with SEPA and the Scottish Executive that EIC provides south of the border.”

The EIC will follow up the launch of the lobby with a conference on Scottish land remediation to be held in Glasgow on September 27. Among the speakers are industry experts, Scottish Executive and SEPA representatives, including SEPA chairman Sir Ken Collins.
