Accolade for construction company

Construction company Wilson James has won the WRAP Award for Sustainable Construction at the national Building Awards.

Showing that simple solutions are often the best, the company received the award for is use of a ‘consolidation centre’ – a kind of central hub from where materials are requested by those working on site and dispatched as they are needed, making dramatic reductions in waste and journeys.

The idea cuts down on the inefficiency of bulk orders and deliveries, which often lead to unnecessary journeys and huge waste as well as damage to materials as it sits on a site waiting to be used.

The London Consolidation Centre, run by Wilson James, aims to cut lorry journeys by half, reduce wastage and reuse and recycle up to 70% of waste that does arise.

An earlier operation for Heathrow construction achieved a 40% reduction in C02 emissions and savings of 2% of construction costs.

“We are delighted that Wilson James has won WRAP’s first Sustainable Construction Award,” said Liz Goodwin, WRAP’s chief executive.

“Targets for the industry to reduce waste to landfill and build more sustainably signify the relevance of such an award category. The good work that Wilson James has done to ensure materials are used more efficiently and waste is recycled really echoes what WRAP is working to achieve throughout the construction industry.

“The consolidation centre approach demonstrates the key role supply logistics has to play in reducing construction waste by delivering materials to site when needed which reduces damage. By serving a large project or a number of different jobs, they are also able to reuse left over materials, rather than putting them in the skip. The construction industry is making real progress in improving its environmental impact, and our award recognises this.”

Other finalists included Bovis Lend Lease, Crest Nicholson, Taylor Woodrow and British Gypsum, Avebury and 4Delivery.
