Swedes will soon be able to choose food according to the impact its production and transport have on the climate, as indicated by a new label for climate-friendly foods.

From next year Swedish shoppers will be able to easily identify food that was flown in from the other side of the world or produced using fossil fuel-intensive methods.

“It’s unlikely that a product that has been transported by plane would be called climate-friendly, for example,” said Jessica Elgenstierna, spokeswoman for the Swedish food consumer organization KRAV that is behind the scheme.

“The climate issue is one of the biggest questions when it comes to environmental sustainability. That’s why we’re doing this.”
