An expedition from England to Timbuktu powered by biodiesel made from waste chocolate has been completed – but the intrepid explorers ran out of steam just 30km before the end.
Andy Pag, 34, from London, and 39-year-old John Grimshaw, from Poole, set off on the 4,500-mile drive to the African city in November in a bid to raise public awareness about biofuels.
They used just 10 litres of petrol as an additive during freezing weather in Spain, and 10 litres of diesel at the end of the journey. The rest of the expedition was powered by 2,000 litres of biodiesel.
Mr Pag said the expedition was carbon negative, as their vehicles have been “recycled”, after being given a new life with local people in Timbuktu.
The duo are now planning their second expedition – a carbon neutral flight from the UK to China using fuel made with landfill waste.
