Northern Ireland takes waste cheats to court

Two separate cases have shown that authorities in Northern Ireland are keen to pursue businesses which breach waste management and disposal laws.

In the first case, a man from Scarva in County Down was fined a total of £5,000 for breaches of waste management legislation.

Mr Noel Martin was caught by Environment and Heritage Service officers operating a site which contained controlled wastes in the form of scrap metal, end of life vehicles and parts of vehicles.

The site did not have a licence to operate as an authorised treatment facility for end of life vehicles.

In the second case, Eddie Torrens from Ballymoney was ordered to pay a total of nearly £3,500 for operating a waste management site illegally.

Officials investigated a site owned by Mr Torrens and discovered a substantial quantity of controlled wastes.

These mostly comprised of vehicles and parts of vehicle. In fact, the officers suggested that around 4,000 vehicles were on site at the time of the visit.
