New energy regulations for Science Foundation Ireland

Michael Martin, the minister for enterprise, trade and employment, has announced the new regulations to amend the remit of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) to include sustainable energy and energy-efficient technologies.

The regulations follow an agreement between Mr Martin and the minister for communications, energy and natural resources to target a world-class research capacity investment through SFI of Euro 90 million in the two areas.

Areas of sustainable energy and energy-efficient technologies are prescribed as strategic areas of scientific endeavour under the new regulations, which Mr Martin said is a “vital component” of long-term economic development for Ireland.

“SFI has been very successful in building Ireland’s research capacity in the fields of information and communications technology and biotechnology, and I am sure that this success will be replicated with this new energy remit,” he concluded.

Last month Mr Martin announced a new SFI Centre for science, engineering and technology.

The centre, named Clarity, will receive Euro 16.4 million funding and aims to develop systems than sense, process and analyse occurrences in the real world and respond in an appropriate manner.
