Eamon Ryan, the Energy Minister, was present at the opening of the Charles Parsons Research Initiative at the University of Limerick.
The centre was developed using funding from the Charles Parsons Award grant.
The centre researches energy issues and aims to improve the use of sustainable energy in the country.
It hopes to attract students and researchers into cutting-edge sustainable projects in Irish universities.
Mr Ryan said that it was important that Ireland develops a source of renewable energy due to rising oil costs and climate change issues.
“The Government is committed to meeting our climate change, renewable and energy efficiency targets but can only do this if we lead the way in energy research,” he added.
Sustainable Energy Ireland recently said that to reach national renewable energy targets for 2020, the sustainability of biomass needs to be considered.
