Mouchel currently controls leakage detection for three zones in North East London. From 29 September the group will take control of all eight zones in the North East and North West areas, while also picking up trunk main leakage, in addition to seepage, as a related activity.

As part of the contract, Mouchel will carry out leakage detection and associated activities across North London, covering two of Thames Water’s four network areas.

The contract will involve bringing around 260 staff and sub-contractors on board; most through the TUPE process from the incumbents.

The work has been awarded for an initial period of 18 months, during which time Mouchel will implement Mobile Workforce Management (MWM). By using handheld telephone units, the management system allows many activities to take place in the field – which isn’t currently possible – including the sending and receiving of leak surveys in real time and the attachment of photographs and GPS locations to jobs.

Phil Stephenson, director for Mouchel’s Operational Services business unit, said: “These are the largest leakage-related contracts in the UK and some of the most significant globally. MWM will make a real difference to Thames Water’s service and provide savings in terms of travel time, efficiency, consistency of reporting and management of staff.”
