Leading ground engineering specialist Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering (BBGE) has launched Balfour Beatty GeoEnvironmental to provide a complete service for land remediation.

The newly formed business, led by environmental expert Ian Gatenby, will sit within the BBGE group of companies and extend its expertise into a growing area of construction.

Balfour Beatty GeoEnvironmental is the latest development in BBGE’s quest to be the number one provider of ground engineering services.

The new business will bolster the land remediation capability of BBGE’s subsidiary companies Stent, Pennine, Testal and Branlow with a comprehensive range of new services. These extend from initial risk assessment and site investigation, right through to remediation design, physical clean-up and validation.

Graham Wren, executive director of BBGE said, “We are launching Balfour Beatty GeoEnvironmental at a time when clients are increasingly looking to reduce their impact on the environment and control their costs. Our aim is to offer our clients integrated solutions in ground improvement, remediation and piling which will deliver clear cost and project management benefits.”

Ian Gatenby joins BBGE and will lead Balfour Beatty GeoEnvironmental. Ian has considerable expertise in land remediation and sustainability, gained during his 30-year career in the construction industry. He has worked with organisations including: London Development Agency, London Underground, National Grid Properties and Network Rail, and most recently held the position of Director of White Young Green’s environmental consultancy business. In this role, he also integrated site investigation, asbestos management and ecology into the consultancy business as new skill sets.

Of his new role, Ian said, “I am delighted to be joining Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering and look forward to helping the company strengthen its environmental offering, initially in the area of land remediation, but ultimately on a broader scale.”

Ian continues, “Balfour Beatty GeoEnvironmental will get involved at the early stages of each project. This allows us not only to advise but also to provide clients with practical solutions that can be seen through from start to finish. Clients are far more knowledgeable nowadays about contaminated land and its liabilities. The main questions they ask at the feasibility stage of most projects are, ‘How much will it cost to clean-up the site’ and ‘How can we minimise the impact on the overall programme?’ As a remediation specialist with a strong design and hands-on contracting capability we are able to provide the answers they are looking for.”
