John Gormley, minister for the environment, heritage and local government, has approved the proposal for funding, with an estimated €1.02m set to come from his department’s Water Services Investment Programme 2007-2009.

As part of the upgrades, the council is to provide a storm holding tank and construct a new pumping station to ensure that the village is being provided with water which meets required standards.

Mr Gormley said: “The fact that more money continues to be provided for investment in schemes such as Cloghroe reaffirms the commitment in the Programme for Government that all wastewater discharges into our rivers, lakes and coastal waters meet the highest international standards.”

In the recent budget, a record provision of €560 was available to be spent on water services infrastructure in 2009.

The Water Services Investment Programme is made up of 955 projects which have a capital value of €5.8bn.

This includes the development of 443 new schemes and 77 major ongoing projects.
