Minister gives out green hotel awards

Hotels and guest houses throughout the country have been receiving green hospitality awards from the department of the environment, heritage and local government.

Any companies that had become more resource efficient through the likes of cutting waste water and preventing waste were on the receiving end of the award.

Michael Kitt, minister of state for the department, said: “These hospitality businesses have demonstrated their commitment to the environment through the implementation of environmental systems which have realised very significant resource efficiencies.

“They are not producing less waste, conserving water and energy and lowering their carbon output as a consequence.

“The experience of the Green Hospitality Award participants demonstrate that taking measures to reduce your environmental impact need not be seen as a burden or a threat to business.”

A number of hotels received the award, which is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency National Waste Prevention Programme.

In total, the department has predicted that over Euro 3m worth of savings have been made by making green and economically sustainable changes.
