According to the Irish Times, the new design solution will feature a retaining wall and cable stayed cycle facility.

The path will also serve as part of the city’s flood defences and had its environmental impact assessment approved by the An Bord Pleanala.

Proposals for the Sutton to Sandycove route, set to become Europe’s longest urban cycle path, were first announced in 2002.

The project’s final report, published in 2006 by the Dublin Regional Authority, indicated that the new path would provide “safe access” to the surrounding wildlife in Dublin Bay.

Dublin’s unbroken cycle path will pass through a number of coastal locations, including Dollymount, Clontarf and Marino.

The route will also take advantage of existing cycle path infrastructure, such as the route along the East Wall Road, which is expected to be completed last.
