Rise in number of building energy assessments

There has been a significant increase in the number of Building Energy Rating (BER) assessments carried out in Ireland, new figures show.

According to research by Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI), an average of around 250 BER assessments have been registered each day since the start of the year.

It became mandatory for all dwellings offered for sale or lease to have a BER certificate on January 1st.

The BER certificate is a requirement of the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and gives property a rating based on its energy efficiency.

Kevin O’Rourke, head of built environment at SEI, said: “Homeowners have responded very positively to their obligation to provide a BER certificate when offering a property for sale or rent.

“It is clear that the consumer information campaign to support the roll out of BER to existing homes since January 1st is having the desired impact.”

Some 8,658 assessments have so far been registered.

Recent research by SEI revealed that energy-related CO2 emissions in Ireland fell by 1.4% between 1990 and 2007.
