Wales pays environmental professionals to go back to school

The Welsh Assembly has set up a bursary for those working in sustainable development who want to add some academic weight to their professional qualifications.

The programme will offset the costs of studies for those already working in the upper echelons of the environmental sector.

It aims to encourage those working in sustainable development to build on their existing expertise and earn a doctorate while carrying out research that helps the organisations they are working for.

Those interested will be able to apply for a bursary which will cover half the fees of their course, up to £3,500 over three years.

The bursary is a joint initiative between the Welsh Assembly and Glamorgan Business School.

The Assembly’s Ms Davidson Environment, Sustainability & Housing Minister Jane Davidson said: “It is vital that sustainable development play a key role in all parts of both the public and private sector.

“As a government we are committed to ensuring sustainable development is embedded in all that we do. We will use all of our devolved powers – from health, transport to education – to lessen Wales’s environmental impact on the world and help our country for future generations.”

Professor Alan Lovell, Dean of Glamorgan Business School, added: “The programme allows leading practitioners in the fields of sustainable development to work collaboratively with academics on matters of critical global importance.

“By bringing these groups together regularly we will create a support network that is unavailable on conventional doctorate awards.”

The bursary is designed for those already well established in this field and working at the middle or senior management level.
