Jean Leston, WWF climate change transport policy officer, suggests that there is almost a “direct correlation” between cutting travel budget costs and environmental impact.

A report by the World Travel and Tourism Council published earlier this month committed to reducing carbon emissions across the sector by 50% by 2035.

The Leading the Challenge on Climate Change paper also targets a cut in emissions of 30% by 2020.

Mr Leston explained: “A lot of different companies tell us we have a policy of trying to reduce our CO2 and travel by 20% and we have achieved cuts in our travel budget by 30%.

“I say that this is a perfect win-win convergence between the two agendas to reduce costs but also to reduce carbon.”

A survey by ACTE-KDS, published earlier this month, indicated that 61% of organisations now have a corporate social responsibility charter in place.
