Now in their third year, the awards seek to highlight the good work being done by businesses to push forward the sustainability agenda.

We are now looking for companies that are working on environmental projects that are leading their field to enter the awards.

The project awards are broken down into eight categories – Carbon Reduction; Water & Wastewater; Local Government Initiative; Green Retail Initiative; Renewable Energy; Sustainable Construction; Green Corporate Initiative and Waste & Recycling.

Our judging panel is made up of:

  • Paul Bettison who will lead on Local Government Initiatives. Chairman of the Local Government Association’s environment board, Paul is also leader of Bracknell Forest Council. He is an expert on the role and duties of local authorities in delivering on the sustainability agenda.
  • Peter Bonfield, who will lead on Sustainable Construction. Chief executive of the Building Research Establishment (BRE), Peter has been with the edie awards since the beginning and this will be his third year as a judge. Current project include helping to create the sustainable development strategy for ther 2012 Olympics and his fifteen year career in construction has focused on driving innovation and improved sustainability across all construction sectors.
  • Leonie Greene who will lead on Renewable Energy Initiatives. Working for the Renewable Energy Association, Leonie is a former political adviser at Greenpeace where she initiated their Decentralised Energy campaign. She also worked for the Deputy Mayor of London on sustainable development and the conception of the London Climate Change Agency.
  • Liz Parkes, who will lead on Waste & Recycling. Head of waste for the Environment Agency, Liz has been with the agency since it was established in 1996, having previously worked in waste management for local authorities and the Tidy Britain Group. Her role at the agency requires her to ensure that government waste policy translates into real action on the front line, in both the public and private sectors.
  • Jonathon Porritt, who will lead on Green Corporate Initiatives. One of the best-known environmental thinkers in Britain today, Jonathon heads up the Sustainable Development Commission, is a founder of Forum for the Future and former director of Friends of the Earth. Edie readers voted him Environmental Personality of the Year at last year’s awards.
  • Tom Stephenson, who will lead on Water & Wastewater. Head of School of Applied Sciences at Cranfield University, Tom is another regular on the judging panel, back for a second year. Coming from a strong engineering background, he has been responsible for growing the university’s water sciences activity and is a respected expert and regular media commentator in this field.
  • Adrian Wilkes, who will lead on Carbon Reduction. Chairman of the Environmental Industries Commission and Secretary of the all-party Parliamentary Environment Group, Adrian writes regularly on how the business community can reduce its environmental impact. The EIC lobbies policy makers in the UK and EC on the behalf of member companies working in the environmental sector.
  • Joanna Yarrow, who will lead on Green Retail Initiatives. Environmental broadcaster and consultant, Joanna has published a number of consumer-facing books on green lifestyle issues and has fronted several high-profile campaigns. She is a regular commentator on news and current affairs programmes and is GMTV’s expert on environmental issues.
