Councillor Declan McDonnell has called on Galway City Council’s 15 members to help resolve the issue, starting with the elderly living in the community.

He suggests it helps the community access safe drinking water by thrashing out a deal to replace the dangerous pipes.

“We have to work with the residents’ associations and the community in getting the best value for the people of Mervue,” Mr McDonnell said.

“If this means sitting down with contractors and hammering out a cost-effective measure for bringing the water from the mains to the tap then let’s do it.”

Lead pipes can contaminate water and repeated use can cause a dangerous build-up in the body.

It has been known to cause behavioural problems and learning difficulties in small children.

The Mervue-based councillor has urged the council to work with the Department of the Environment to secure additional funding to help bring the issue to a satisfactory conclusion.
