Majority of Europeans concerned about water supplies

Furthermore, respondents to the study said that water quantity was also a problem that worried them.

The Eurobarometer survey found that 68 per cent of Europeans were worried about water quality, with Greeks (90 per cent) showing the most concern and Austrians (26 per cent) reporting the least.

Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas pointed out that good water is essential to economic and societal survival.

“Europeans realise the seriousness of the issue and they understand that action is needed to maintain clean and sufficient water resources for the survival of our society,” he said.

Mr Dimas urged members of the European Union to fully implement all legislation on water to ensure standards are maintained at an acceptable level.

The survey found that almost two out of five (37 per cent) believed the water in their country had deteriorated in the past five years.
