Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) is looking for companies to take part in its Sustainable Energy Awards 2009 contest, which recognises the achievements of Irish firms who have managed to cut energy costs and improve environmental performance.
The search for competitors was launched yesterday (April 1st) in Athlone and event attendees were shown how last year’s participants were able to show savings of over euro 17m.
Some projects managed to deliver as much as 40% in energy cost reductions – outlining the business benefits of going green.
“Once again we are inviting businesses across the island of Ireland to show us how they are leading by example in energy cost reduction,” explained SEI Chief Executive Professor J Owen Lewis.
He said the issue was more important now than ever, adding previous winners had shown that it can make real business sense to cut energy use.
It comes as the European Commission announced it is to introduce new legislation on consumer electronics that could save the equivalent of a year’s electricity output for Portugal and Latvia by 2020.
