Lancashire schools to go green

A cluster of schools and colleges in Lancashire are trying to reduce their own impact while improving awareness of environmental issues amongst students.

Six schools and colleges have come together under the banner of the Lancashire Wildlife Trust’s Trailblazers project to look at ways to address their carbon footprint, reduce water use and waste and carry out practical conservation work.

Students at Canon Slade School are working with staff to carry out an environmental audit and hope to get certification for improvements in environmental management on the campus.

Other schools are carrying out similar projects as well as involving students in work to drive home the importance of sustainability.

Pupils at Bolton School, for example, have been making a film about climate change that they will show to the rest of the school and others in the area.

A group from Preston College is producing a pantomime about recycling which they will perform at primary schools throughout the county.

“Hopefully that message will be with them for the rest of their lives if we can inspire them at this point,” said Dan McDermott, project officer at the trust.

Students from other schools will head out to the wilds to carry out conservation work.
