The seminar last Friday (24 April) took place the day after the government announced four new ‘clean’ coal power stations would be built.
David Kennedy, chief executive committee on climate change, ignored protests from climate change groups as he welcomed more coal power stations as long as they have Carbon Capture Storage (CCS).
He said: “We certainly do see a role for CCS. There’ll be four demo projects and everyone would agree that’s great.”
Mr Kennedy did point he hadn’t intended to speak about coal but the announcement, which appears to have caught many in the industry off-guard, had forced his hand.
Dr Keith Allott, head of climate change WWF UK, painted a bleak picture for the future of the planet explaining the science was in his view ‘scary’.
He said: “We need to recognise this is getting worse.
“Forget the chainsaw the tailpipe and the chimney is killing the Amazon … but we need to stop the chainsaw too.”
