Council clears 2,000 tonnes of waste

A clean-up operation has seen 2,000 tonnes of illegal waste removed from an unlicensed dump in County Kildare, it has been reported.

The local council removed the garbage from sites along the proposed M9 motorway route, according to the Leinster Leader.

Kildare County Council has reportedly served site notice orders to two landowners to remove the remaining material and ordered testing for contamination.

The authority refused to disclose either how much waste is still to be removed or how much the clean-up has cost, but the newspaper suggested the price could run into the millions.

Council spokesman Charlie Talbot explained the responsibility should lie with the people who allowed the illegal dumping to occur.

“We are pursuing this through notices we have served with landowners in respect to the remainder of the waste which we consider as being a potential threat to ground water in the area,” he told the news provider, adding the material needs to be disposed of properly.

In other news, a hearing is currently underway into plans for an incinerator in the harbour area of Cork.
