Minister for the environment, John Gormley, said the country’s progress was ‘laudable’ but they couldn’t rest on ‘our laurels’.

Speaking yesterday (October 15) at the Repak Annual Awards for 2009 at Croke Park the minister announced a new recycling target of 75% for packaging waste to be achieved by 2013.

The minister said there’d be no ‘free rides’ as he also launched a pilot to make sure businesses were recycling in ‘selected areas’.

He called on the packaging industry to focus its efforts on the development of an ‘accord’ aimed at delivering substantial reductions in packaging waste.

He said: “The application of good waste reduction policies coupled with enhanced recycling will not only deliver substantial environmental benefits to Irish society at large they will prove good for business in the long term”
