World Bank puts it weight behind REDD

The World Bank says it's already preparing for a fully operational REDD scheme regardless of what is agreed in Copenhagen.

The scheme, which stands for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest degradation in Developing countries (REDD), is still on the drawing board but could be given the green light at COP15.

Should it be implemented at the talks it would not formally begin until 2013, but preparing the developing world for it is already underway.

Beniot Bosquet the World Bank’s director for forests and climate change at the World Bank said he was pushing ‘REDD readiness’.

He said: “Countries must focus on their management arrangements for REDD and consult … these strategies don’t come out of a hat.

“They must be, you know, adopted collectively by the nation, that involves the public and private sector and also services for indigenous people.

“This is actually quite challenging … it’s not typically how things are done and when you think of REDD as a development problem you need to see as part of a development policy.”
