Thousands of people around the world are spending the day ‘queuing’ for a toilet to highlight the fact many thousands of people live without access to clean water.

In London today around 200 people queued behind a giant loo in full view of Parliament wearing Gordon Brown masks and calling on the prime minister to ‘take action on the global sanitation crisis’.

The queue, which in the UK was organised by water charity Wateraid, was one of about 70 taking place in countries around the world and marking the fact 4000 children die every day because of lack access to sanitation and safe water.

The queue is organised by global campaign group End Water Poverty and is taking place in countries as far and wide as Senegal, Sweden, Brazil and Benin.

The European Union also marked World Water Day by announcing a partnership with the Water Supply and Sanitation Technology Platform (WSSTP).

The cooperation has set out a high-level roadmap for sustainable water use in an integrated water management system between the chemical industry, urban water and partners
