Power use at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is being published as part of green drive of Government departments.

Defra’s is based at Nobel House, Smith Square, London and the online information can be found here.

The building was built between 1926 and 1929, has ten floors with 1154 employees and is heated through natural gas.

A spokesman said: “The online tool captures and displays real-time energy information with updates every five seconds providing an overview of the energy consumption, cost and carbon dioxide emissions.

“This approach ensures that Defra is transparent about the amount and cost of energy use within the department.

“The valuable energy performance data generated will help to raise awareness amongst Defra staff and provides a further incentive to reduce our energy use.”

As more data is collected it will become available in different formats, for example, for the past week, month and year, according to Defra.

The Home Office and the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) already publish their power use.
