Edie was given a tour of the system, which launched on Friday (October 8), to see the food and brewing waste generated by the firm turned into renewable gas.

The system will be extensively tested over the next six months and then the brewer and could then generate up to 4.8 million kilowatt-hours per year will be produced by the plant- enough to heat around 235 family homes for a year or run an average family car for 4 million miles.

The plans has been built through a joint venture by Adams Bio Energy – a business created by a partnership between Adnams and the Bio Group

Chief executive of Bio Group, Steve Sharratt OBE, shows edie around the plant here;

Former environment secretary, Lord Gummer, pressed the button to send the first packages of gas to the grid.
