Today (December 8) and tomorrow has seen a ‘huge’ increase in water use according to the authority.

Authorities also fear people filling baths to conserve water for themselves, as report of the problem spreading from the capital with water shortages now reported around Ireland.

Around half of local authorities in Ireland are restricting the flow of water with threats of cutting off people who use too much water being proposed.

A spokesman for Dublin City Council said: “Due to a huge increase in demand for water in the past week, all areas will have their supply restricted, particularly over the next two nights, (Wednesday 8th, Thursday 9th) from 7pm to 7am.

“We are appealing to people in the Dublin region to reduce their water consumption and in particular, people are asked not to leave taps running.

“Customers should note that it will take time for the water to make its way through the pipe network while the system recharges.

“There is no need for people to fill baths or store large quantities of water – water tanks in every home or business will have sufficient quantity to cover the amount of water needed when water will be restricted.”
