The London Leaders programme was created to promote sustainability in the local community. The leaders receive support from the Commission through training, events, press and publicity.

Launched in October 2007, the programme brings together 15 sustainability leaders from across London’s sectors and from all walks of life, each committing to undertake a project or an action to demonstrate sustainability in action.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, supporting the project, said: “This project is all about us helping inspirational people to unleash their creativity still further, to motivate others to get involved in order to improve our city.”

London Leaders come from all walks of life, and in the past have included working mothers, chefs, teachers, musicians, business-owners and representatives from London’s football clubs.

Previous London Leaders’ projects have included running a sustainable fashion competition and retro-fitting green roofs in central London.

The programme and was set up as part of the drive to make London a global benchmark sustainable city by 2020.

Successful London Leader applicants receive support from the LSDC and London Leaders programme team at the Greater London Authority to develop their personal leadership skills, promote and deliver their project.

LSDC chair, John Plowman, said: “We began the London Leaders programme after research from around the world showed that one of the best ways to make a city more sustainable was to recruit local ambassadors and support existing community projects.”

Applications are open from 10th January – 4th February 2011. Applicants can apply online via at the LSDC website.
