For example on an exercise bike Ms Cooke peddled for four and half minutes, covering 1.8 miles, to generate 20 watts of energy – enough to power a standard light bulb for an hour.

Ms Cooke then had to pedal almost another three miles to generate another 31 watts to create enough power to make a cup of tea.

She said: “I can’t believe how much energy it took me to power one single kitchen, I’m exhausted.

“It just goes to show how much energy we use around the home without thinking about it.”
